ADHD and Working Memory—Bridging the Gap Between Knowing and Doing
It is frustrating when a high schooler studies hard for a test, knows the material well at the kitchen table, and then blanks on exam day or forgets to hit the submit button on their homework. Parents and teachers often mistake this for careless mistakes or not caring, but it is usually caused by a working memory bottleneck. ADHD is rarely a problem with intelligence or understanding; it is a problem with the mental bridge connecting what a student knows to what they can actually do under pressure.
Working memory is like the brain’s mental scratchpad. It holds onto temporary facts and directions while you work. For students with ADHD, this mental scratchpad fills up quickly and can easily wipe clean when they get distracted. When a test question asks a student to read a long paragraph, recall a math formula, do multiple steps, and write neatly all at once, the mental scratchpad overloads. The student didn't forget the subject; their brain just dropped one piece of the puzzle while juggling everything else.
To take the pressure off working memory, students need ways to move information out of their heads and onto paper. Instead of trying to hold every formula, date, and outline in their mind during a big test, teach them to do a quick "brain dump" on scrap paper the minute the exam starts. Writing down the key facts right away frees up their brain power to focus on reading the questions and solving problems.
The same idea applies to turning in homework. In a student's mind, an assignment feels done the moment they finish the last sentence. That makes it easy to forget the final steps of saving, uploading, and checking the submission. Creating a quick checklist that separates "writing the paper" from "submitting it to the online portal" ensures all their hard work actually counts toward their grade.
